Chapter 18

“Dude, are you crazy? You don't even know this guy!”

Tyson had seen this coming. As he stood outside the car two hours later, waiting for Damien and Gabe to return from their washroom break, he paced back and forth, unsure of how to respond.

“Tyson, answer me,” Tyler demanded. “And I swear to God if you're the next rape victim who gets his body chopped into a million pieces and thrown in a river by some psycho, I'm blaming it all on you.”

Tyson couldn't help but laugh. “Come on, Tyler. It’s not that deep. I'm fine.”

“This isn’t funny. I don’t think you realize what you might be getting yourself into.”

“Look, I’m tired of arguing over this. I’m not going back to Georgia’s, so let it go.”

“I'm serious, Tyson.” Tyler’s voice wobbled with every word. “You’re worrying me. I think I should tell Holly and David.”

“No,” Tyson hissed. From the corner of his eye, he saw Gabe exit the Tim Hortons they stood in front of. “I’ll literally be home by tonight. I’ll tell them when I’m close to home. They’ll just think Georgia drove me and dropped me off. I’m not about to stress them out right now.”

“Oh, but stressing me out is okay.”

Tyson bit his lip. No matter what he said, it wouldn’t make things better. “Sorry. I’m really trying to make things work, okay? At least I have a way home. Might not be the best way, but at least I’m not stuck in Revelstoke. And look, I have to get going. I'll text you along the way, but don't lose it on me if I stop replying because chances are there'll probably be no service for a bit. Okay?”

Tyler heaved a dramatic sigh. “Whatever you say.”

“Don't worry about me.”

“Please, be careful then,” Tyler begged. “I swear to God, Tyson, be careful.”

“I will,” he whispered.

Tyson rushed through his goodbye and climbed back into shotgun in Damien's Lexus. He was still dumbfounded at how shiny everything appeared and how the “new car” smell enveloped him. He kind of wanted something like this when he got a car, but he still wasn’t old enough to get his licence, nor could he ever afford something this nice. Besides, Dad’s truck was currently sitting in Holly and David’s driveway, waiting for the twins to turn sixteen so they could share it.

Damien hopped in the driver's side and seemed to notice Tyson's expression, because he said, “You like her, huh?”

Tyson nodded. “This interior is so fancy,” he said. “Lots of space. Very sporty-looking.”

Damien laughed. “What got me was this baby right here.” He gestured to the touch screen. “Don't have to worry about feeling around for stupid buttons when you're driving. And get this.” He revved the engine. “A V-6.”

As Damien began to pull away, Tyson leaned back in the seat and allowed his eyes to close for a minute. His mind wandered to all the times he and Dad would practice fixing up the Honda in the garage when things went wrong (which seemed to be pretty frequently, given its age).
